Are Veneers Right for You?

The Short Answer

What are dental veneers, and can I get them in Matawan?

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom coverings bonded to the front of your natural teeth to change their color, shape, or size. At Matawan Dental Galleria in Matawan, NJ, we offer porcelain veneers for chipped, gapped, discolored, or uneven front teeth. Veneers are one of Dr. Vin Rajan’s areas of focus. We’ll discuss the shade and shape you’d like before treatment.

Veneers may be an option if you have:

  • Chipped teeth.
  • Small gaps between teeth.
  • Discoloration.
  • Uneven tooth shapes.
  • Worn teeth.

First, we’ll check your teeth, gums, enamel, and bite. We’ll treat any cavities or gum disease before placing veneers. Grinding or major alignment problems can also affect whether veneers are right for you.

Porcelain Veneers vs. Dental Bonding

The main differences are how much tooth preparation each needs, how it’s made, and how much upkeep to expect.

What to consider Porcelain veneers Dental bonding
Suitable concerns Color, shape, chips, and small gaps Smaller chips, gaps, and shape changes
Preparation Usually requires removing a small amount of enamel Often needs little or no enamel removal
Treatment approach Custom porcelain coverings are made first, then bonded in place Tooth-colored resin is shaped right on your teeth, so treatment is often shorter
Relative cost Usually costs more Usually costs less
Maintenance Resists stains better but can chip or need replacing Can stain or chip, and may need touch-ups more often

If your teeth need to move, Invisalign may be a better fit. A badly damaged tooth may need a dental crown instead of a veneer. Our Cosmetic Dentistry page covers your other options.

What Can I Expect?

Porcelain veneers usually take four steps:

  1. Consultation and smile planning. We’ll examine your mouth and talk about the shape and shade you’d like.
  2. Preparation and impressions. We usually remove a small amount of enamel to make room for the veneers. Then we take impressions of the prepared teeth, digitally when appropriate.
  3. Custom fabrication. Your veneers are custom-made for your teeth. You may wear temporary veneers while you wait.
  4. Fit and placement. We’ll check the fit, shade, and bite before bonding the veneers in place.

Caring for Your Veneers

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth once a day, and keep up with your regular checkups. Don’t use your teeth to open packages or bite hard objects. If you grind your teeth, ask us how to protect your veneers.
